If you are browsing Stoic Time, you may know what Stoicism is. But in case you are new to it, here is a working definition: an ancient philosophy of ethics, around 2000 years old, that puts at its core a journey on the path to happiness via the virtues of self-reliance, treating others well, and the relinquishment of what cannot be controlled. It is to be Stoic – meaning to cultivate neutrality and acceptance, rather than apathy or silent suffering.
Stoic thought has a long tradition of using aphorisms. An aphorism is a concise, terse, laconic, or memorable expression of a general truth or principle. They are often handed down by tradition from generation to generation – Wiki definition. This provides the answer to why Stoic Time?
We believe having Stoic or similar philosophical aphorisms close to hand on a poster, on a mug or notebook, can remind you of these important philosophical principles, such as the virtues of self-reliance, treating others well, and the relinquishment of what cannot be controlled. These principles will help you on the path to living the life you wish for and to stay true to this path.
It is this idea that inspired our team to take many of the most famous sayings and put them on to every day simple objects to help foster engagement with and practice of the thought or principle.
We believe it is worth taking some time each day to slow things down – to focus on yourself, whatever that means to you: your thoughts and feelings, your relationships with others, your personal goals. Stoic philosophy is a way of life that is easily captured by the quotes found on our products. To this end our ranges will feature sage advice from the most eminent and well-known Stoic philosophers: Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus.
We also have a collection dedicated to Cicero as well; while he is recognised as Skeptic, and therefore not a Stoic, his words can offer similar consolation and guidance, and fit well with Stoic Time’s other philosophers.
We have further expanded our ranges beyond the world of Stoicism to encompass life-changing words and ideas of all stripes, while remaining true to Stoic thought. To this end we have included a collection based on Epicurus, who founded his own school Epicureanism. We believe his words are powerful and are aligned with Stoic thought. Hence his inclusion in our collection.
Our aim is that perhaps writing in one of our notebooks prompts you to pause and think, or wearing one of our t-shirts sparks conversations with others; in any case, we hope that our range encourages you to make Stoicism and these philosophical aphorisms a part of your everyday life.
